Historical Background
The 1994 200 Lire coin commemorates the Arma dei Carabinieri’s 180th anniversary. Founded in 1814 by King Victor Emmanuel I of Savoy, the Carabinieri served as an elite military police corps tasked with public security, anti-bandit operations, protection of the monarchy, and law enforcement across the Kingdom of Italy.
Over two centuries, the Carabinieri evolved into one of Italy’s most respected institutions. They took part in the Unification Wars, fought on multiple fronts in both World Wars, and carried out counter-terrorism, anti-kidnapping, and organized-crime operations throughout the late 20th century. Their motto, “Nei Secoli Fedele” (“Faithful Through the Centuries”), reflects their enduring commitment to loyalty and service regardless of political change.
By the early 1990s, the Carabinieri had expanded into specialized branches including counter-terrorism groups, forensic science units, environmental protection, and international peacekeeping missions. The 1994 commemorative coin recognizes this long tradition of vigilance, national service, and sacrifice.
Design Symbolism
Obverse: Designed by Laura Cretara, the front features a stylized female figure representing the Italian Republic, surrounded by the inscription “Repubblica Italiana.”
Reverse: The reverse displays the Carabinieri flaming grenade emblem, laurel decoration, and the anniversary date 1814–1994. The motto “Nei Secoli Fedele” underscores the corps’ long-standing ethos of loyalty and service. The denomination L.200 appears at the bottom.
